Making materials more environmentally-friendly
We care about our planet in order to preserve our natural playground and contribute to the pleasure of hiking. With this jacket, we have mastered our new, environmentally-friendly dyeing process on the navy blue colour. Therefore, from 2019, we have selected material made up entirely of recycled polyester fibres for all other colours. As a result, we have reduced our environmental impact on all the colour versions.
Working towards more environmentally-friendly dyes
Our teams work to find innovative processes that reduce water consumption or water pollution during the manufacturing process. The dope dyeing technique (mass pigmentation) reduces water consumption by 60% and significantly reduces the amount of CO² emitted. This also reduces colour fading over time.
Since 2019, we have been using this process on the navy colour (while we master the technique on other colours): this colour will arrive in stores and online during the season.
A score for comparing the products' environmental impact
On a scale from A to E, this jacket was given a score of A.
Our products' environmental impacts are calculated over their entire life cycle. A score is given to each product so that you can easily identify the more eco-friendly products within a particular family (t-shirts, trousers, backpacks).
Decathlon is committed to displaying the environmental information of its products.
Waterproofing of the garment
This clothing was validated in a shower test using 60 litres/sqm/hour of water for 1 hour. This test reproduces the average conditions of a rain shower. The fabric of this jacket is water-repellent, i.e. water runs off its surface without being absorbed. As a result, the fabric does not soak up water and stays light and breathable. The water-repellent property is achieved by treating the outer fabric. Moreover, we taped the main seams that are most exposed to the rain.
How to maintain the waterproof property of your jacket over time
To maintain good waterproofing over time, the fabric's water-repellent properties must be restored regularly. We recommend doing this every three washes or after a dozen uses in the rain. The water-repellent property is easily reactivated by warming the fabric: either in your tumble dryer or with a hairdryer, for example, over a relatively short period. If you are washing it, it must be thoroughly rinsed.
Waterproof rating expressed in mm or Schmerbers
The resistance of a fabric is measured by the height of a water column in mm that can be supported by the fabric (test based on the ISO 811 standard). The higher the pressure, the more waterproof the fabric. A component with a waterproof rating of 2,000 mm can therefore withstand the pressure exerted by a 2,000 mm water column.
Component breathability
To find out whether a fabric is breathable, we measure its thermal evaporative resistance coefficient (RET) based on the ISO 11092 standard. The lower the fabric's resistance, the more water vapour generated by physical activity can escape, and the higher the fabric's breathability.
- RET < 9 = extremely breathable fabric
- 9 < RET < 12 = very breathable fabric
- 12 < RET < 20 = breathable fabric
- RET > 20 = little or no breathability
How to choose your waterproof jacket based on your type and level of sporting activity?
During sports activity, the extent to which we perspire depends on the intensity or the duration of the physical effort. If the breathability of the fabric is not adapted to your type of physical activity, the perspiration vapour condenses inside the jacket. You will feel damp insidethis is not rain coming through, but perspiration vapour condensing. You therefore need to choose a rain jacket according to your type of physical activity. This jacket is designed for 2-hour hikes at no more than 5km/hr
Additional recommended products
We also recommend the NH500 waterproof over trousers to protect your bottom half. This will give you a complete protective outfit, efficient against wind and showers.
And, first and foremost: from 2019, we will also start using this more environmentally-friendly dyeing process on these over trousers!
