How to choose your bodyboard size
The size of the bodyboard directly influences its stability and ease of handling. It must be suited to the size of its user. As such, this bodyboard is designed for riders weighing between 40 and 60kg and between 145cm and 165cm tall. A bodyboard that is too small will not float enough so you will miss waves. A bodyboard that is too big will be difficult to handle.
Refer to the size chart online or in store to help you choose.
At OLAIAN we design bodyboarding products according to your level: Beginner, Intermediate or Advanced.
We use the following definitions:
- Beginner: Rides green and broken waves <80cm; is learning to steer in the waves; does not duck dive (diving under the wave).
- Intermediate: Rides waves up to 1.5m; is in control of their line and can do a few tricks (360°, El Rollo, etc.).
- Advanced: Rides all types of waves and successfully lands all kinds of tricks, even aerials: ARS, 360°, inverts, barrels, etc.
NB: We recommend the use of fins for all levels.
Construction suited to the intended user weights and conditions of use: Beginner level.
If this bodyboard is used in green or white waves over 80cm and/or by riders over 60kg, it could become damaged: breakage, bending, etc. This bodyboard has a dense plastic slick on the bottom, which provides better glide in the waves than one without. If you want to bodyboard in waves over 80cm, the 500 or 900 models would be a better choice for you.
Correct positioning on the bodyboard.
The nose of the bodyboard is preformed for optimal hand positioning.
As you catch the wave, both hands are placed at the front.
To go left, keep your left hand at the front (your hand, elbow and shoulder should be aligned, with your upper arm at 90° to your forearm) and move your right hand back to the middle of the board and grab the right rail. Position your left leg in line with the left rail to maintain your direction.
Do the opposite to go right.
Tips to avoid irritation and for a good grip on the board.
While riding the wave, this bodyboard is used lying down. It is important to wear a long-sleeved UV protection top or wetsuit to avoid irritation on the belly and arms.
For a good grip on the bodyboard, it is recommended to apply wax (available to purchase separately in the surfing aisle) to the deck, particularly on the front of the board where you put your hands, on the sides, and under your belly. Reapply every session.
Recommendations for use with or without fins.
Although it is best to use fins when bodyboarding, this model can be used with or without fins.
Without fins, the water level should no higher than your waist. In this case, propel yourself towards the beach by pushing off from the ground as the wave or foam passes (<80cm).
With fins, the water level can be above the waist. Kick energetically towards the beach as the wave or foam passes (<80cm).
Safety rules and behaviour in the water - Part 1.
Bodyboarding is a fantastic sport that requires certain fundamental rules to be followed for the enjoyment and safety of all.
1- Ask about and observe the characteristics of the spot: current, rocks, influence of the tide, wave size, number of people in the water, etc.
2- Do not overestimate your skills and choose an easier spot if the conditions exceed your abilities.
3- Use suitable equipment: Leash, fins and board in good condition, suitable wetsuit
Safety rules and behaviour in the water - Part 2.
4- Follow the wave priority rules: Priority is given to whoever is closest to where the wave is breaking.
5- Go around the surfing area as you paddle out to the break to avoid getting in another rider's way.
6- Use fins if the water level is higher than your hips.
7- If you are not using fins, it is recommended to stay in the safe swimming area, ask the lifeguards present at the spot.
8- Ride with friends.
Do not leave out in direct heat.
When not in use, do not expose your bodyboard to direct sunlight or temperatures above 30°C.
As such, protect your bodyboard by putting it in a bag, under a beach umbrella, in the shade or under a light-coloured towel, so that it does not warm up.
Avoid leaving it in a car in direct sunlight.
If the board is exposed to excessive heat, blisters or bubbles could form, or the board could even warp.

OLAIAN
OLAIAN is the new Decathlon brand devoted to surfing, bodyboarding & skimboarding. This Basque-sounding name is inspired by the universe of our development centre in Hendaye, in the Basque Country. It is the contraction of OLA, as OLATU means wave and IAN, a Basque suffix meaning “inside”. At OLAIAN, we see a potential playground in every wave and we want each person to be able to improve whilst enjoying themselves, regardless of their surroundings and their environment.
